ELCHE PALM GROVE

Discover Europe's largest palm grove, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, featuring unique palm species, historic gardens, and a rich cultural landscape for tourists.
The Palmeral of Elche is the largest palm grove in Europe, with more than 200,000 date palms. It is a unique cultural landscape of outstanding value and universal significance. Although its origin is earlier, as shown by the presence of the palm in Iberian pottery from the 2nd century BC, it was the Arabs who began its cultivation and use, employing oasis culture techniques from North Africa and the Middle East. They built a complex irrigation system that still survives today. The centuries-long survival of this oasis agriculture system was one of the aspects valued by UNESCO when it listed it as a World Heritage Site. Landmarks of the Palmeral -Municipal Park One of the most emblematic places in the Palm Grove. Highlights include the Molí del Real (an 18th-century mill), the Music Pavilion, the Dovecote, and the Hort de Baix. -Palmeral Museum and Huerto San Plácido Located in a 19th-century traditional house in Huerto de San Plácido, it presents the history, culture, and uses of the palm grove through panels and audiovisuals. The white palm workshop is also located in the same house. The visit ends with a walk through the orchard and a demonstration of the palm grower's trade, including a palm climbing demonstration to see pruning and date harvesting. -Route of the Palmeras Singulares This 5 km route through the historic Palmeral features 17 unique specimens known for their shape, morphology, age, or history. It includes iconic palms such as La Font, La Imperial, La Cobra, and Araceli, living symbols of the city's natural and cultural heritage. -Hort dels Pontos This orchard is part of the Palmeral Route and the PR-CV 439 trail and belongs to the Historic Palm Grove of Elche, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It houses the oldest traditional orchard house in the city, featuring elements of historical rural architecture. Visitors can explore both the orchard and the museum house. -Huerto del Cura Declared a National Artistic Garden, this 13,000 m² botanical oasis features over 1,000 palm trees, Mediterranean and tropical plants.
