MUVI Y TESORO DE VILLENA

Discover a unique museum showcasing a rich archaeological heritage and an extraordinary prehistoric treasure, featuring stunning gold and silver artifacts.
The MUVI, Villena's Museum, inaugurated in June 2024, is located in the former building of the Electro Harinera Villenense, a landmark flour and electricity factory that was a fundamental pillar for the region. The factory, strategically located near the railway, facilitated the loading and unloading of coal brought from Asturias, essential for the poor gas engines it originally used. Over time, these engines were replaced with electric ones. In 1957, the electrical section was sold to Hidroelectrica Española, and the factory focused exclusively on flour milling. From 1966, the company transformed its facilities into cold storage chambers for fruit, an activity that continued until 1986, when the last Board of Directors decided to cease production. MUVI is the result of merging the important archaeological heritage previously housed in the José María Soler Municipal Archaeological Museum and the ethnographic collection of Jerónimo Ferriz, who gathered items throughout his career as an agronomist. On December 1, 1963, archaeologist José María Soler discovered the Treasure of Villena, an impressive collection of 66 metal objects including bowls, bracelets, bottles, and various gold ornaments. It also contains three silver bottles, a bracelet, a gold-decorated iron finial, and a button made of amber and gold. Weighing nearly 10 kilos of gold, this treasure was hidden about 3,000 years ago and is considered the most important prehistoric treasure in Europe.
