SANTUARIO DE LA VIRGEN DE LAS VIRTUDES

This stunning sanctuary features a Renaissance entrance, Gothic architecture, and a Baroque chapel housing a revered image, making it a must-visit for tourists.
The Sanctuary of the Virgen de las Virtudes, located seven kilometers from Villena, is one of the city’s great treasures. Tradition tells of the villagers' desire to build a temple for a patron saint to protect them from the plague that devastated the population. Thus, the Virgen de las Virtudes was named advocate against the plague and patron saint of Villena. The sanctuary is accessed by a wide staircase leading to a Renaissance doorway, which opens into a cloister with semicircular arches on brick pillars. The church, with three naves and Gothic style, was inaugurated in 1581. The Baroque chapel, decorated with 18th-century stuccoes and paintings, houses the image of the Virgen de las Virtudes, affectionately known as "La Morenica" for her dark skin tone.
