PLAZA MAYOR

PLAZA MAYOR

This emblematic historic space is notable for its regular architecture, its rich history as a market and its influence on squares in other cities.
The Plaza Mayor of Valladolid is the first regular square in Spain. The space was always a market square in the Late Middle Ages, a zone for merchants, trades, and festivities. After the fire that devastated the city center in 1561, reconstruction began, promoted by Philip II and with the designs of Francisco de Salamanca, which made it the first regular Plaza Mayor in Spain, enclosed and with arcades. This model was adopted by others such as Madrid, Salamanca, and cities in Latin America.
