MUSEO DE LA CUCHILLERÍA

This museum features a unique collection showcasing the history of folding knives and cutlery, with innovative exhibits and guided tours available.
The Palacio del Hortelano was designed by Daniel Rubio in 1912 for Joaquín Hortelano, hence its name. The neo-Gothic style façade is especially attractive due to the green color given by the tiles and the pinnacles that frame it. The eclectic structure with continuous windows gives the façade a fairy-tale appearance, organized through two irregular wings. Daniel Rubio uses a modernist style that he introduces to the city, drawing attention to several points: the door with a semicircular arch and decorated archivolt, the gallery with five openings, and the pinnacles. Its floor plan is rectangular and is articulated through the two stories visible in the façade’s composition. The steep roof recalls the Nordic taste it imitates. Like many of the preserved buildings in this city, its function has varied throughout history (foundling home, headquarters of the university’s Social Council, and headquarters of the Local Police) and it has lost the surroundings that once accompanied it. The so-called Palacio del Hortelano has housed the Cutlery Museum since 2004. This latest renovation was carried out by a project led by Sevillian architects who modified the interior to make space for one of the most interesting collections in the city. On the first floor, one can explore the history of the folding knife and the legacy gained by the cutlery industry in the province. On the second floor, the exhibition includes numerous pieces from the APRECU (Association of Cutlery and Related Business Owners) awards and from collections that the museum has acquired over time. The collection is presented in an innovative museographic context in which the visitor can tour alone or accompanied by the guide service offered by the museum (with prior arrangement).
